Congratulations to John Healey on his appointment as housing minister, the fourth in under two years. Let’s hope he is more Austin Healey than Denis Healey. Britain has got to get building again and quicker than former rugby international Austin Healey’s feet in Strictly Come Dancing.
I don’t know John Healey, but some Yorkshire common sense please. Talk to the nation’s housebuilders and housing associations, and insist banks and mortgage companies get lending, especially on shared ownership schemes.
It is now not the economy that is stalling the housing market, but the lenders and it is time to remind banks, especially the nationalised ones, that while the MPs expenses scandal may have taken the heat off them in terms of media column inches, the public has not forgotten whose money bailed them out and where it now needs to go - to borrowers, not bonuses.
