The greatest: Michael Phelps reigns supreme in Melbourne

American swimmer Michael Phelps joined Tiger Woods and Roger Federer as supreme master of his sport when he won an historic seven gold medals at the World Championships, shattering five world records by huge margins.

His coach, Bob Bowman, believes he can get even better and Phelps is hoping for a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics next year.

Australia’s Libby Lenton was the female star here with five gold medals.

Britain managed one silver through Kirsty Balfour in the 200m breaststroke and three bronzes. On the last day of competition David Davies took bronze in the 1500m freestyle and Liam Tancock was third in the 50m backstroke, adding to his 100m backstroke bronze.
